Crystalens® IOL

After cataract extraction, patients have traditionally received a monofocal IOL (intraocular lens) implant. These lenses are a great improvement over a cloudy cataract lens, or no lens at all, but usually correct only distance vision. It is common to lose near vision with the normal aging process (a condition called presbyopia), and thus most cataract patients also require reading or bifocal glasses after surgery. Newer advances in cataract lens replacement can correct vision at a range of distances from near to far.

The Crystalens IOL works with the eye’s ciliary muscle to adjust vision according to distance, a process called accommodation. A unique hinged design allows the lens to flex more easily than other lens implants. By approximating the function of a natural lens, the Crystalens IOL provides a range of near, intermediate and distance vision.
